Creating an outdoor space that complements both your home and garden requires more than simply laying paving. Thoughtful design can completely change how you use your garden while enhancing its natural surroundings.
For this project in Walton on the Hill, the customer wanted to replace an ageing timber decking area that had deteriorated over the years. The goal was to create a large entertaining space that looked elegant, blended with the mature garden and could be enjoyed for many years with minimal maintenance.
The Brief
The existing timber decking had become rotten and no longer suited the property.
Rather than simply replacing it with another deck, the customer wanted a premium patio that would maximise the outdoor space while making the most of their beautiful garden. They also wanted pathways connecting different areas and attractive planting beds to retain plenty of greenery throughout the landscape.
What We Did
Removed the old timber decking.
Installed approximately 160m² of Kandla Grey Indian sandstone.
Added a contrasting charcoal block paved edging around the patio and pathways.
Installed a new pathway leading to the front door.
Created a side pathway linking seamlessly into the main patio area.
Designed a unique curved patio with a large circular front edge to create a softer, more elegant appearance.
Installed raised key kerbs to form attractive flower beds around the patio.
Finished the project with clean lines and carefully integrated landscaping.
The Finished Result
This transformation completely changed the way the garden can be enjoyed.
The expansive Indian sandstone patio provides an impressive outdoor entertaining space while remaining perfectly in keeping with the property's mature surroundings. The gentle curved design creates a much softer appearance than a traditional square patio, adding character and drawing your eye naturally into the garden.
The charcoal edging frames every section beautifully, highlighting the sweeping pathways and defining each area without overpowering the natural stone. The raised flower beds introduce colour, texture and seasonal interest, ensuring the hard landscaping sits harmoniously alongside the existing trees and planting.
The finished garden now offers multiple seating areas, improved accessibility and a timeless design that will continue to look fantastic for years to come.
Helpful Advice: Don't Underestimate the Power of Curved Patio Designs
Many patios are built using straight lines simply because they're easier to construct, but introducing curves can dramatically improve the overall appearance of a garden.
Curved pathways and rounded patio edges soften the landscape, make larger areas feel more inviting and help hard landscaping blend naturally with lawns, trees and planting. When combined with premium natural stone and carefully planned borders, the result is a garden that feels thoughtfully designed rather than simply paved.
If you have a large outdoor space, considering bespoke shapes instead of standard rectangles can make a significant difference to the finished result.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Indian sandstone suitable for large patios?
Yes. Indian sandstone is one of the most popular choices for large patios thanks to its durability, natural appearance and wide range of colours.
Why choose a curved patio instead of a square design?
Curved patios create a softer, more elegant appearance and often complement mature gardens far better than straight-edged layouts.
How much maintenance does Indian sandstone require?
Indian sandstone is relatively low maintenance. Occasional cleaning and keeping joints in good condition will help it continue looking its best for many years.
Can patios include planting areas?
Absolutely. Raised flower beds and landscaped borders help soften paved areas, introduce colour throughout the seasons and create a much more balanced garden design.
